Why Did We Choose the WordPress Platform?

I’ve been building websites since 1995. Back then, I was working at Honeywell Aerospace. I was using a text editor and typing the HTML and CSS codes by hand to create each page for static, in-house websites. This was long before SonFisher Web Studios and before I’d ever heard of a content management system (CMS). Fast-forward a few years, and SonFisher Web Studios has grown into a team of designers and content management professionals, both specializing in WordPress for business.

So Why WordPress?

In 2011 SonFisher Web Studios began looking into content management systems as the industry changed and our clients needs grew. We looked into a different CMS while we were still building static HTML and CSS sites. We knew the industry was moving to a platform based system and we wanted to be among the first to offer this to our customers.

With early platforms there were limitations, crashes, mysterious errors and long hours to get a working website. Finding experts that were willing or able to troubleshoot these issues was difficult, at best.

You’ve probably heard of reputation management or monitoring. Many online companies offer these somewhat questionable services to help individuals and brands repair their good name online. From bad reviews to social media trolls, keeping your brand’s credibility clean can become time consuming.

Wikipedia breaks down the practice like this:

Are Website Builders Killing Your Business?

Almost every web hosting company out there (Godaddy, Breezi, Weebly, Jimdo, InMotion, Hibu*, Web.com, Wix, Square, and more) offers some sort of website builder. A word to the wise! There are some serious problems ahead if you decide to invest in these ‘proprietary builders’ for your business website.

Obstacles that can cost you in the long run, don’t just cost your marketing budget, but your time and energy. Before addressing the obstacles, let’s look at trying to use a builder yourself. If you have a small budget and you’re thinking that doing it yourself is the way, awesome! Please set aside at least 3 months worth of learning time to get truly proficient before you publish your site for the world to see. Don’t waste time asking one of your employees to try it out. They cannot communicate the details of the effort enough to help you see how much (or how little) effort really goes into producing a decent result.

Can You Prove That You Really Own Your Website?

Wouldn’t it be scary to think that you may have signed the ‘title’ of your web domain over to a stranger? I’m not trying to scare you, but a little healthy respect is good for your business. Do you think you’re too small an operation to think about this now? Could you have already given it all away? Maybe you don’t think you have. Are you sure? Can you prove ownership in a court of law? Do your really own your website? Does the ‘title’ have an expiration date? If it does, do you know when that is? If there’s a typographical error in the company name, or address, do you know how to fix it?

What to do?

First priority for you as a current or future domain owner; SAFEGUARD THE ‘title’ to your internet property! Because no-one else can do that for you as well as you can. Given the opportunity, there will always be those aiming to steal it out from under your very nose. Even the folks that aren’t out to ‘get you’ can make a mistake that can cost you hours-and-hours of work to repair.

Inexpensive Marketing, Done Dirt Cheap…

  1. Make your website part of your organization’s overall business strategy. Train staff to know what the website has and how it is organized so they area able to direct inquiries to the website for the latest and greatest.
  2. Writing and posting press releases at free Public Relations sites can generate some traffic, but only if you have something new or newsworthy. If you don’t, you might try making some news by developing an online survey & posting results, holding a contest, celebrating your company anniversary with a giveaway or special event, or announcing a public speaking engagement. Local groups often look for luncheon speakers, convention speakers, etc. Do it for a low-cost (or even free), with the stipulation that your slide show will have your logo and URL on it, or have someone read your short bio before you speak, with some emphasis of your URL.
